Setting Your Daily Purine Limit

Managing how much purine you eat each day is a cornerstone of gout control. The Purine Daily Limit card in Gout Radar helps you track—and personalize—your “purine budget,” so you can make confident choices and lower your risk of painful flares.

What Is the Purine Daily Limit?

  • Your Purine Daily Limit is the maximum amount of purine (in milligrams, mg) you should eat in a 24-hour period to stay below the uric acid “danger zone.”
  • Default limit: Most people with gout should aim for ≤ 300 mg/day (unless your doctor tells you otherwise).

Why 300 mg Per Day?

  • Expert consensus: Clinical guidelines from the American College of Rheumatology and UK NICE show that keeping purine intake under 300 mg per day helps most people stay below the critical uric acid threshold (~6 mg/dL).
  • Research-backed: Large studies show gout risk climbs steeply above 350 mg/day, while keeping intake under 300 mg (and ideally under 200 mg) can greatly lower flare odds.
  • Practical rule: 300 mg lets you enjoy one high-purine serving (≈150 mg) plus two moderate servings (≈70 mg each), then fill your plate with low-purine foods.

How Does the App Use This Limit?

  • Each morning, your Purine Left “budget” resets to your daily limit (e.g., 300 mg).
  • Every time you log or scan a food, its purine value is subtracted from your budget.
  • If you pass 200 mg, your ring turns yellow (caution). If you hit your daily limit, it turns red and you’ll get a reminder to focus on low-purine foods and hydrate.
  • Personalize it: You can adjust your limit at any time under “Edit Daily Limit”—for example, set it lower if you have frequent flares or kidney issues, or higher if advised by your healthcare provider.

How to Use Your Purine Limit

  1. Track your intake: Scan or log foods as you eat. The app does the math for you.
  2. Aim to stay under your limit most days.
  3. If you go over: Don’t panic—just aim for more low-purine days the rest of the week.
  4. See your trends: Use the Purine Intake Chart to spot problem foods, high-risk days, or opportunities to improve.

Take-Home Rule

Keep daily purine at or below 300 mg unless your doctor sets a different target. This usually means no more than one high-purine food per day, and filling up on low-fat dairy, fruits, vegetables, and water.
